JKMiner just passed me on the Oppo F@H group. But let’s look at the metrics carefully:
He has completed 23 work units for a total of 487,069 which comes to an average of 21,176 credits per work unit.
My rig has done 13 work units for 465,676 credits for an average of 35,821 per work unit.
Objectively, if both users were only utilizing a single CPU and a single GPU for the work units, that would put jkminer ahead of me. But that isn’t true.
Look at the “active clients” within 7 days. It counts to 5 separate work queues. So his set-up is either
multiple
computers, or
multiple work units
assigned to separate cores on his CPU (yes, it’s possible to split up your cores to handle more work units).
As it stands, his F@H performance is on par with mine, but I suspect that he is actually using multiple computers to try to get ahead. Meanwhile, on my stats, I’ve got only two active clients - or work queues. One for my CPU, and one for my GPU.
So what does this mean? In racing terms, it means I’m running a hypercar like a McLaren or Koenigsegg, while the other guy is running a few Porsche Caymans.
Edit: I forgot to add that I was running F@H at Medium
for those 13 work units. I’ve just cranked it to Full, and we’re gonna see what that does...not seeing too much of an increase in power consumption, though.

Is this some sort of competition or are you on the same team?

Internet dick measuring while doctors get to use your computer for research. Units are assigned to the more powerful systems first so it’s really just who has the better computer wins.

We’re on the same team, but also some mild competition.

I’m going to be slowing down my Folding@Home client once Star Citizen pushes the Alpha 3.9 update, to test the game out. Then once I get bored with it, going to turn F@H back to medium or full. :P

I am using multiple computers, but also Folding@home has not been super great and handing out work units. I’m running this on 2 main machines each with a Ryzen 5 and a GPU, but both of them are usually only running 1 job (either on CPU or GPU). See below with only 1 job running on my workstation.
Specs for those interested:
- Ryzen 5 2600 with GTX 1050 (plex server)
- Ryzen 5 3600 with RX 5700 (workstation)
I’ve also been pulling out old laptops and firing them up to run this so we’ll see how I come out here. Just added a 3rd gen mobile i7 to the mix, it won’t add much but it’ll crunch a few numbers. I am a System Engineer who is always tinkering so I have a fair bit of compute I can point at this thing, so it’s not totally fair...

Word of note, the slider just lets the client automatically change how many threads on the CPU its using but you can give slots a set number. Not all WUs play nicely with odd numbered threads; similarly while higher thread WUs yield more PPD, there is vastly more projects using lower core counts. Adjust your hardware as you see fit but keep in mind the GPU needs one core free per active slot, and will not fold unless the slider is set to “full”
In my testing 4T/6T slots yield the same PPD on my ryzen chip, but 12T yields 30% more. However you can push 3x as many WUs a day if you focus on the smaller jobs.
Alternatively, setting the advanced flag can sometimes push more late stage beta jobs to your client but you sacrifice points for stability.

So my comparison of a Koenigsegg vs a handful of Porsches is accurate, then. As an aside, my rig is also a personal build, it runs off of G.
Skill F4-3200C14-16GVK’s and a MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon (MS-7B78)
.
I’m not as good of a builder as my deaf friend who made a fortune in BitCoin farming, but I know enough to build a decent rig. :D

Honestly I should just run on my GPU if this is what the distributions are. GPU gets 30x the credit for the same power draw.

Ryzen 7 2700X, and Vega Frontier Edition 16GB. A work unit on the Vega just finished, took like 5 minutes to send back to the server. It crunches monster units (worth 70k or more).

Nice build. I’m running a closely related board in a MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC.

People running multiple GPU’s will rip the competition to shreds.
Unfortunately, SLi and Crossfire has been going by the wayside as GPU makers focus on getting VR/4K gaming-capable standalone
cards to the market.

Fun fact Zen 2 is such an improvement that my Ryzen 5 3600 is equal to your 2700 in compute (while using less power) an d my RX 5700 is quite comparable to your Vega.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3600/3238vs3481
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Vega-Frontier-Edition-vs-AMD-RX-5700/3929vs4046
So you’re comparison doesn’t really hold, were running equivalent primary rigs (plus all my extra ones).

All the new cards still support NVLink which is the successor to SLI, the reason that multicard setups have become less popular in gaming systems is that the majority of developers have stopped optimizing for multiple cards and as a result most new games completely ignore a second GPU. Multi-GPU setups are still hugely popular in compute applications though.

That’s true. I’m waiting for the next-gen GPU from AMD this summer, it’s supposed to be aimed at the Radeon VII/Vega Frontier crowd. As for Zen 2, I’m giving it some consideration, but my CPU processing power is already meeting my needs for Star Citizen, so it’s not as important.

To take full advantage of a next gen top tier GPU you’ll probably want pci express x4 which means you’ll need a new mobo (x570) and processor.
When the 4th gen ryzen comes out the 3rd gen stuff will usually get a big price cut so that would bet you a nice upgrade at decent cost,

Yup, but I’m perfectly happy with my current rig, so I’m not going to worry about all that for another 4 or so years.

I just installed it and joined the OPPO team... now my rig is a little old... Athlon X4 630 with a Ge Force GT 640. So I don’t think I’ll be at the top of the work unit list.

Something to note NKato - the ranking system for Folding@Home is not for each unique user. If multiple people sign up and fold with the same username, it adds those scores together for the ranking system.

I currently have around 4 million points after about two weeks of folding. I'm also running it on the high setting on a total of seven Xeons, a 9th gen i5, and a 2060 Super so that probably makes a difference.

I’ve long given up trying to understand the points system. My 1080 Ti and 660 have completed more than double the number of units as the next closest person in my group but those 270 work units make up less than a seventh of my team’s 12,500,000 point total. My husband’s 970 has more than t hree times as many points as me and I started a week before he did. At this point I just say fuck it. We’re all helping medical research.

I’m starting to get bigger work units for my CPU in the meantime. It takes a few hours to burn through a 70k Work Unit for my GPU as well.

Why...does any of this ranking stuff matter? Isn't the point just to combine computing power to get us out of this mess we are in? Am I crazy? WHO CARES ABOUT RANKING??
